Mendoza -Argentina's most prolific wine-producing region

Created by Wines of Argentina to celebrate Argentine Malbec, Malbec World Day is a global initiative held each year on 17 April.

Since its first edition in 2011, the initiative has been supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Argentine Wine Corporation as part of the country's Plan Estrategico Vitivinicola Argentina 2020.

Cities around the world will once again take part this year, hosting Malbec-themed events and promotions in restaurants, wine shops and bars, as well as open air tastings and large scale street parties.

In Buenos Aires, the festivities kicked off early, with Malbec Week running throughout the city from the 3-9 April. As part of the festivities the city hosted expert talks, open air tastings, discounts in restaurants and wine bars, ahead of Malbec World Day on 17 April.

"Malbec is a variety that has a lot of reputation and prestige,"said Alberto Arizu, President of Wines of Argentina.

"Argentine wine is a good example of a sector that works and improves even in adverse conditions. That is why we believe that there is potential ahead. Facing a new edition of Malbec Week is for us a way to celebrate this thriving industry and honor our flagship grape."

Funds raised during Malbec Week will be donated to a charity of the Vicente Lopez district, addressing a policy of Corporate Social Responsibility.

In the UK, Argentine restaurant chain Gaucho will be celebrating World Malbec Day by offering a range of "super"Malbec cases comprising six Malbecs that "set the standard for quality and distinctive expressions of their individual terroirs,"cherry-picked by director of wine and Argentine aficionado Phil Crozier.

The Super Malbec Cases, priced at ￡179, are available from Gaucho's online wine shop and include the likes of Colome Zuccardi, Catena, Dona Paul, Humberto, Trapiche and Mendel.
