A blue wine is set to hit the UK market soon with the aim of luring in new drinkers to the category who are put off of wine due to the snobbery surrounding it.
Made by Gik, it is comprised of red and white grapes grown in vineyards near Madrid, including the La Rioja, Leon, and Castilla-La Mancha regions, and is only given its blue hue thanks to a dye. The sweetness comes from an additive and is said to taste slightly like a Riesling.
Gik's website explains that wine culture shouldn't be exclusive: "We do not believe in wine tasting rules and we don't think that anybody should need to study the bible of enology to enjoy a glass of wine."
The team behind it are believed to have no tradition within the wine world, and the company explains that it was "born for fun...To shake things up a little and see what happens."
After having initial early success in Spain, Gik will be launched across Europe this summer and should be priced at around ¡ê7.50-per-bottle.
