On August 15th,after wine tastings on the 2014 national wine judges annual meeting,many judges shared their reviews and offered some advice for Hexi Corridor¡¯s future development.
Zhu Li:We can make the world-class wines
What impressed me most today was the first group¡¯s five Pinot Noirs.The western region had its own advantages.We don¡¯t need to plant Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot grapes across all regions.Our western region also has its own best grape varieties.We can make the best wines with unique natural conditions and excellent wine technology.
I think we are seeking too much oak and trapped by market.Some wineries would say consumers like oak wines,but there are technical defects in their wines.We can learn from some new world wine countries,see how they combined wine¡¯s bouquet with oak perfectly.Our consumers are growing very fast,so they may not like this type wine in the future.
I still have confidence in western wines.Many wines have good performance on recent International competitions.In addition,international wine experts also recognized our varietal wines,and wine technologies.We need more patience,but in the next years we can make the best Chinese wines.
Zhang Chunya: obvious progress made,technical staffs need to broaden their horizons
It¡¯s my third time to taste wines in Gansu.But each time,the feelings are different.I felt very pleased after tasting 32 Hexi Corridor wines.I found many stylistic wines.Our winemakers are seriously making wines.
But we have to face the reality.In some aspects,we need to do more work,for example in grape planting,vineyard management and decide the harvest time. Also,we need focus on details during wine making,while dealing with anti-oxidation or infusion time.
We should encourage our technical staffs walk out and visit some wine world regions that climate similar like Hexi Corridor,such as New Zealand,Oregon,Washington,and parts of Italy to tasted their wines and enrich themselves.

Yu Huiming: Use barrels properly,properly pick grapes and pay attention to blending
First of all,I think Hexi Corridor wine regions should develop regional varieties,like Pinot Noir.Second,there are some mistakes in using barrels or oak chips.Some wines if not aged in barrels are also good wines,but unreasonable use of barrels can let wine lack its original style.Third,about the grape harvest.In Ningxia,most people think slightly postpone the harvest time are better,but I think wine needs balance.Last,most of wines we tasted today were single varietal wines. Winemaker should improve their blending skills.
Zhang Junxiang: How to reflect wine features?
I always planting grapes in Ningxia, so I also know something about Gansu grapes.The Pinot Noir wines surprised me.These are what we called ¡°easy to drink wines¡±.It¡¯s smooth,can easily accepted by consumers.Most of our consumers used to be spirits and beers drinkers,so we need to study what kind of taste can attract them.
Just now,I was discussing with Zhang Chunya,why some training in China seldom use domestic wines.We all knew the answer,there were few Chinese style wines.Our winemakers first should make the easy to drink wines then stylistic wines.It¡¯s need a long time to study region difference.
Last,Our wines age so fast,why? It¡¯s a problem need all of us to study.
Kuang Yangfu: Focus on grape¡¯s characteristic
To make stylistic wines,except talking about planting and wine making,we also need to study characteristic of grapes.Among these wines,a wine made of Shuang You and Shuang Hong grapes,I think it¡¯s good. They have potentials for making good wines,not only for single varietal wines or blended wines.After all,these grapes are hardy grapes,they don¡¯t need to bury in winter.So it will save lots of cost.
Wang Shusheng: How can we make the good wine?

The purpose for finding problems is to improve.From samples tested,we found that Chinese wines are making progress,wine¡¯s quality are getting better and better year by year.In recent years,I have tasted many good wines,in Huailai,Ningxia or Xinjiang.With right varieties,good wine making work and good vintage,we can make wines that can compete with world wines.
After all,wine industry in china is an emerging industry. Some said winemakers were constricted by technology.Not only winemakers,some winery owners didn¡¯t pay much attention to wine making.Their wineries are normally built very beautiful,but the owners wouldn¡¯t willing to buy new barrels,high quality corks and good yeasts.Winemakers can¡¯t decide the whole wine making process,how to make the good wines? Such problems existed in most of wineries.We've made great progress,but we still need to do more work.
