DAWA 2016: Chinese wines awarded more than 140 medals

  Chinese wines significantly increased their standing in this year's Decanter Asia Wine Awards (DAWA), winning 142 medals across seven regions and led by Ningxia wineries.

DAWA 2016: Chinese wines awarded more than 140 medals

The DAWA 2016 medal haul for Chinese wines is three times higher than in 2015 and compared to just 12 medals for China in 2014.

The latest result is evidence to China's fast developing domestic fine wine industry.

 

An 2014 vintage Icewine from Chateau Fenhe of Heilongjiang Luyuan Winery, was awarded a gold medal in this year's competition, repeating its success with the 2013 vinetage in the 2016 Decanter World Wine Awards earlier this year.

 

Ningxia leads the way

 

Ningxia led the way at DAWA 2016, winning with 11 Silvers, 46 Bronzes and 37 Commended. Xinjiang followed with 4 Silvers, 10 Bronzes and 15 Commended.

 

Sixteen Chinese wines, with the majority being Cabernet Sauvignon, won a Silver Medal in this year's competition.

 

However, DAWA 2016 also showed that Chinese winemakers are exploring beyond Cabernet Sauvignon for potential quality varieties in China.

 

A Chardonnay from Chateau Zhong Fei of Yanqi, Xinjiang province was awarded a Silver Medal. Two Syrahs from Lilan Winery and Tiansai Vineyards of Ningxia were also awarded Silver.

 

A NV sparkling rose made by Chandon winery and a Cabernet Sauvignon-based ros?from Guangxia Yinchuan, both from Ningxia, were awarded Bronze Medals.

 

CH'NG Poh Tiong, vice chair of this year's DAWA, highlighted the quality of Chinese Syrahs and rose as  'a pleasant surprise'in this year's competition.

 

A total of 2,854 wines were tasted by judges in DAWA 2016.

 

The wines were judged in Hong Kong by over 40 wine experts from across Asia. The judging process was led by Steven Spurrier, chair of the competition, and six vice chairs, namely Gerard Basset OBE MW MS, Michael Hill-Smith MW, Professor LI Demei, Tasaki Shinya, Andrew Jefford and CH'NG Poh Tiong.
